Cartier Santos Carree
The white dial of this Cartier Santos Carree, reference 2961, carries fine spider craquelure, the lacquer settled into the character collectors associate with original Cartier dials of the period. The reference traces its lines back to the squared case Louis Cartier first drew in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, here reworked into a compact 29mm two-tone form. Steel paired with 18k gold gives the warm, layered look that defined Cartier's sport-luxe register through the late 1970s and 1980s, while the automatic calibre 077 lends more substance than the quartz Santos that followed.
The plain white dial carries painted Roman numerals and a date window, with matching hands. A cabochon crown marks the right flank, and the exposed screws remain the principal architectural detail of the bezel. The watch comes on its two-tone steel bracelet, closed by a rectangular Cartier folding deployant clasp in brushed steel.
