Rolex Datejust "Mahogany Wood"

Mahogany burl is among the rarer dial executions on reference 16238 and the warmest of Rolex's brief experiment with organic dial materials. Wood dials appeared in only a handful of variants from the 1980s, and the mahogany burl is the most deeply figured of them. The 16238 arrived in 1988 as successor to the long-running reference 16018, bringing the calibre 3135 to the all-gold Datejust line. This vintage Rolex Datejust dates from 1989, the first full year of production.

The 36 mm case is 18k yellow gold with the fluted bezel that has defined the Datejust silhouette for seven decades. The dial is the heart of the piece, its grain running in deep brown tones that shift with the light, framed by applied indices and matching hands. The date sits at three under the cyclops, the crown is signed, and the watch runs on its full President bracelet in 18k yellow gold with a folding clasp.

The dial has been beautifully preserved, the wood grain crisp and the printing sharp throughout. Light surface marks are visible on the case back under raking light, with minor scuffs on the centre links of the bracelet, all consistent with careful long-term ownership. The original Rolex box accompanies the watch, and all spare links are included. The case shows minor signs of wear consistent with regular use.
