Cartier Santos "Burgundy"

The burgundy lacquer dial is the heart of this Cartier Santos reference 2960, an uncommon original Swiss-only execution that has developed a fine spider-web crackle across its deep red surface. Cartier built the Santos as one of the first luxury sports watches to wear its screws openly, and this 29mm steel example, carried by the automatic calibre 077, is among the more characterful versions the reference produced.

The colour sets the tone. That rich burgundy is framed by a screw-anchored bezel, with matching hands floating cleanly over the lacquer and a flat date window at the dial's lower edge. A red ruby cabochon crowns the case, a small flash of colour against the brushed and polished steel. The watch is fitted on its original Cartier steel bracelet, closing with a folding deployant clasp bearing the double-C, the whole piece in great condition with the bracelet beautifully preserved.

The spider-web crackle across the burgundy lacquer is the signature of this dial and part of what makes the example sought after, alongside a scattering of fine surface marks that speak to honest decades of wear. The serial has softened away over time.
