Cartier Santos Carrée PM "Burgundy Mosaic"
Twenty-four millimetres across, the vintage Cartier Santos Carrée PM (Petit Modèle) fits the square bezel and visible screws of the Santos into a case made for a slim wrist. This reference 0901 dates from the 1980s, and its shape goes back to Alberto Santos-Dumont, the aviator who asked Louis Cartier for a wristwatch he could wear while flying. The steel bracelet runs straight out of the case in one continuous line, so case and bracelet form a single sculpted piece. Inside is an automatic movement.
The burgundy dial gives this example its name. Its lacquer has crazed into a dense spider web of fine cracks and small particles, and the surface now reads like a mosaic of tiny burgundy fragments. That pattern is why we call this watch the Burgundy Mosaic. Matching hands sit over the dial, and a cabochon-set crown is fitted to the side of the steel case.
The crazing covers the entire dial surface and is the first thing that draws the eye to this piece. Every square of the bezel frames a slightly different patch of the pattern, which makes this dial impossible to duplicate. The watch is offered as a full set, complete with its original Cartier box and papers.
The steel bracelet closes with a Cartier folding clasp in brushed steel.
