Cartier Santos Octagon

The Santos Octagon, reference 187902, is one of the more idiosyncratic chapters in the Santos story. Produced from the late 1980s into the 1990s, it pairs the screw-set bezel of the Santos Galbée with an octagonal middle case and an integrated bracelet of polished and brushed links, setting it apart from its rounder siblings. The two-tone execution in steel and 18k gold, paired with a cream Roman dial, remains the most recognisable expression of the design.

This 1990 example has the cream lacquered dial and painted Roman numerals that define the Santos look, framed by the gold octagonal bezel with its exposed screws. A blue sapphire cabochon sits at the winding crown, and a flat date window sits at three o'clock. Applied indices and matching hands keep the layout calm. The integrated two-tone bracelet closes on a folding Cartier deployant clasp with the double-C mark, and the calibre 87 quartz movement keeps the case slim under a shirt cuff. The original Cartier box is included.

The dial, bracelet and gold bezel are all well preserved, and the watch wears as a confident everyday Cartier from a period when the maison was at its most experimental with the Santos line.
