Cartier Stepped Tank or Pre-Must
In the period bridging the end of the original Paris-made Tanks and the formal launch of the Must de Cartier line in 1977, Cartier produced a fascinating group of transitional references, often referred to today as Pre-Must Tanks. Reference 25716 belongs to this lineage, featuring the distinctive stepped case silhouette that gives the model its collector nickname. These mid-1970s pieces sit in an interesting space: unmistakably Parisian in their proportions and dial design, yet produced in gold plate rather than solid gold, offering the classic Tank aesthetic at a different price point.
This particular example dates to the mid-1970s and presents in its original configuration, with the cream Roman numeral dial, manual-wind movement, and 28mm stepped case that define the reference. It is offered without box or papers.
The gold-plated case retains its stepped geometry well, with small scratches consistent with age and careful wear rather than heavy use; the plating remains even across the flanks and lugs. The cream dial shows a small chip, honestly disclosed, but the printed Roman numerals, minute track, and Cartier signature remain crisp and fully legible. The blued sword hands are original and frame the dial nicely. Mineral crystal is clean, and the crown turns smoothly in winding and setting.
The watch is presented on a grey lizard-grain leather strap, well suited to the cream dial and warm tone of the case.
