Rolex Datejust

The engine-turned bezel is what separates the reference 1603 from the rest of the vintage Rolex Datejust 16xx family, a finely milled steel ring that catches light in short bursts where the fluted 1601 throws it in wide arcs. It is the quieter of the steel Datejusts and, for many collectors, the more interesting one. The 16xx generation ran from the turn of the 1960s into the late 1970s, and this example belongs to the closing decade of that run, still with the non-quickset date set by cycling the hands through midnight.

This particular example carries a plain silver dial, unadorned by texture or pattern, with applied baton indices and matching hands. The date sits at three beneath a cyclops, and the screw-down crown keeps the Oyster case sealed. It is presented on a Jubilee bracelet with a stainless steel folding clasp, the five-link design that has accompanied the Datejust since 1945.

The luminous plots around the dial periphery have aged and discoloured into warm, uneven tones, and the hands carry faint tarnish that reads as honest companionship to the dial. The engine-turned bezel shows light scratches and softened milling, the natural result of decades of cuff contact. The case back has picked up light surface marks and swirls, and there is a small blemish on a bracelet link near the upper lugs. Prospective buyers should also note that the Jubilee bracelet exhibits a degree of stretch, the normal consequence of wear on folded-link bracelets of this age. It remains secure and comfortable, but the play between links is visible when the watch is held horizontally and is not something that can be fully reversed.
