Rolex Lady-Datejust

Gold runs in a narrow line through this Lady-Datejust, catching first on the fluted bezel and then again down the centre links of the Jubilee bracelet, with brushed steel to either side. Rolex introduced the Lady-Datejust in 1957, taking the Oyster case and the date window of the men's watch and drawing them down to 26mm, a proportion the line has kept ever since. At that size the case sits close against the wrist and the five-link bracelet drapes rather than holding its own shape, which is why this combination has outlived so many other dress formats.

This vintage Rolex Lady-Datejust, reference 6917, dates to the 1970s and pairs a steel case with an 18k gold bezel and gold centre links. The dial is white and plain, carrying Roman numerals with applied markers and matching hands, with the date at three. Against that white ground the gold bezel does the work of a jewel, breaking daylight into short flashes above the brushed case flanks. The crown screws down, the movement is automatic, and the bracelet closes on a steel folding clasp with the Rolex crown.

The applied markers have mellowed slightly with age and there are a few small blemishes on the dial towards six o'clock, the honest record of a watch worn rather than shut away. The centre links show light wear from years of movement on the wrist. The case shows minor signs of wear consistent with regular use. Offered with its original Rolex box.
