Cartier Basculante "Grey Dial"

Dark metallic grey and finely textured, the dial of this Cartier Tank Basculante reference 2405 shifts tone as light travels across its narrow rectangle. Painted cream Arabic numerals and matching hands sit within a railway minute track, a documented factory variant of the reference. The Basculante descends from Cartier's reversible Tank of the early 1930s, first sold as the Cabriolet, and takes its name from the French bascule, a seesaw, for the way the case tilts. The model returned in the 1990s in stainless steel with a quartz movement, the five-jewel calibre 059.

The blue cabochon at twelve is not decoration but the release. Press it and the inner case frees itself to pivot within the outer frame, turning the crystal face down against knocks or standing the watch upright as a small desk clock. Sapphire crystal covers the dial. At 24 mm across, the steel case is catalogued as unisex, and it is worn here on a black leather strap with a Cartier deployant clasp.

The case back carries a personal engraving in cursive, ti amo, Italian for I love you, left by a previous owner to mark something the watch has kept to itself. Around it the brushed surface shows light hairlines, with faint handling marks along the polished case edges. The dial is clean and well preserved. The case shows minor signs of wear consistent with regular use.
